Superfood Highlight: Spirulina and Blue Majik - What's the Difference? + Health Benefits

Spirulina and Blue Majik (sometimes called blue algae) are two superfoods that may look very different, but are actually not very different from each other! Spirulina is natually dark green in color, while Blue Majik has a vibrant cyan blue color.

What’s the difference between spirulina and Blue Majik?

Both of these superfoods are extracts of blue-green algae. Not to get too scientific, but there are two main compounds in blue-green algae: phycocyanin and chlorophyll. Blue Majik comes from phycocyanin and spirulina comes from chlorophyll. How crazy is it that these two different superfoods actually both come from algae?!

If you’ve ever thought that anything chocolate-related is unhealthy, you haven’t thought about cacao! Raw cacao nibs, in its purest form, is actually a delicious superfood that has a ton of great health benefits. Cacao nibs come from peeled and crushed cacao beans. At the Herd Juicery, hemp is an ingredient seen all across our menu. We love this ingredient because of the versatility and the several health benefits. Hemp can be found in generally 4 forms: hemp seeds, hemp powder, hemp flour and hemp oil! The Herd carries both hemp seeds and hemp oil. Take a look at these 4 health benefits we’ve compiled about hemp.

  1. Hemp is a great vegan source of protein.

    1. Hemp is another one of those great protein sources! It’s vegan, gluten free, and it provides about 10 grams of protein in each serving! Each serving is around 2-3 tablespoons.

    2. What also makes hemp a great source of protein? They are also called a “complete protein.” This means that all 9 amino acids are found in hemp! Who said vegans don’t get enough protein?!

  2. Anti-inflammatory and antioxidants.

    1. Hemp extract contains CBD, or cannabidiol. This comes with a bunch of health benefits in itself, but one big ones are maintaining brain function, anti-inflammatory effects and antioxidant content.

  3. Hemp has some pretty important fatty acids.

    1. Hemp is also high in fat - but healthy fats! The two main fats found in hemp are omega-6 and omega-3. It’s important that you eat both omega-3 and omega-6, so consuming hemp ensures that you’re getting those healthy fats in. Hemp is high in healthy fats and low in saturated and trans fat.

  4. Hemp is high in nutrients and minerals.

    1. Aside from protein, there are so many more nutrients found in hemp. Some of those include fiber, vitamin e, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and zinc!

At The Herd Juicery in West Long Branch, NJ, we always use fresh turmeric root. We love this ingredient because of its versatility and powerful health benefits. We use turmeric everyday whether it’s in juices, lattes, lemonade, or shots.

Turmeric is a vibrant yellow-orange root that has some amazing health benefits. Turmeric has a natural bright orange color thanks to the high levels of Curcumin found in it. Curcumin is also the compound responsible for many of the health benefits found in turmeric.

  1. Anti-Inflammatory

Turmeric may be best known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Using turmeric regularly can naturally fight inflammation. In fact, multiple studies have concluded that turmeric may be just as helpful for inflammation as some medications such as Advil or Aspirin.

Not getting sick can be tough during the cold and flu season. However, there are a ton of superfoods out there that will help you keep your immune system in check. Turmeric is one of those foods.
